If you would like to listen to audio files and watch video files, you could use the application that comes bundled with the Windows operating system, the aptly named Windows Media Player. If you would like to view images, you can use another application that comes bundled with the Windows operating system – you could use Windows Photo Viewer. That’s what it’s called in Windows 7; in XP it’s called Windows Picture and Fax Viewer while in Vista it’s called Windows Photo Gallery.

That’s fine if you want to stay on Microsoft Street. But if you would like to get off at the junction and get onto 3rd Party Blvd, you could find something like the Online Media Technologies-developed application, the aptly named AVS Media Player.

Here is what you can expect to get from AVS Media Player, from a functionality point of view:
- Play your favorite video files. AVS Media Player provides support for a long list of formats.
- Play your favorite audio files. AVS Media Player provides support for the most popular audio formats. You can create several playlists and arrange the tracks in the playlist as you see fit.
- View images as a slideshow. AVS Media Player provides support for the most popular image formats out there.
- To cater to the needs of an international userbase, AVS Media Player provides language support for English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese.

Personally I liked AVS Media Player's interface – the application has a dark, minimalist interface that struck a cord with me. I also liked how easy it is to use this application – I immediately felt at home using AVS Media Player.

Before you go get AVS Media Player and put it to the test, take a look at these technical details:
Download – the download weighs in at some 74MB.
Installation – at the time of writing this and according to the developer, AVS Media Player provides support for Windows 2003, XP, Vista and Windows 7. During the installation process you are asked if you would like to install AVS Video Converter.
Limitations – there are no limitations. This application is free.

Pros

  • Free
  • Nice looks
  • Easy to use
  • Provides support for numerous video, audio and image formats
  • Works with Windows 7

Cons

  • None that I could think of
